I'm at Santa Barbara City College and planning to transfer to UCSB for environmental studies. A student review said: “SBCC has a strong transfer agreement with UCSB. Many of my friends transferred smoothly.” Another said: “The transfer center is helpful. They know exactly what classes you need.”

But another review warned: “UCSB is competitive. You need good grades. You can't just slide in.” I'm nervous about competition. For those who transferred from SBCC to UCSB, what was your GPA? What made your application stand out?

I'm a UCSB transfer from SBCC. Environmental studies. Graduated last year. My GPA was 3.7. I also worked at the SBCC sustainability office and volunteered at a local environmental education nonprofit. That stuff mattered. In my transfer application, I wrote about a specific project I worked on at the nonprofit. I think that's what got me in.

The transfer center is good but you have to advocate for yourself. Some counselors know more than others. Find the one who specializes in STEM or environmental majors. Ask them about the TAG agreement. Ask them about alternative pathways if TAG isn't available.

Also, go to UCSB transfer events. They have them at SBCC sometimes. Talk to current transfer students. They'll tell you what actually matters.

You can do this. Just plan ahead.
